Why Dovbush?
Kinda Epic Productions was inspired to create Dovbush: Legend of the Karpathians from their own cultural backgrounds. Emily Belke and Joseph Hoffman both dance for Ukrainian companies in Edmonton AB and are themselves Ukrainian. The two researched the many tales surrounding the man called Dovbush and with their co-producer, Karla Gautreau wrote a play encompassing as many of the local legends as they could. Kinda Epic’s version of Dovbush is the tale of a man who leads a group of other in a rebellion against the Polish takeover of the time. Hiding in the hard to find “caves of Dovbush” the group does their best to fend off the advances of the Polish and ultimately succeed in stopping the hardened General Josef Potoski and his army from ruling the country.
Dovbush:
Legend of the Karpathians
Based on the legends of Oleksa Dovbush, this story weaves Ukrainian legends and traditions to tell a story about love, duty, and freedom.
"It was the most epic yet! Loved the stand off moment, both men with spotlights on their faces, swords in hand, after many years of rehearsals of the same stand off moment! There were so many delicious moments, I will be savoring Dovbush in my memory for many years! Love the concept of Ukrainian dance in a well-told story. "
